Using Your Teen’s Love Language to Break the Cycle of Frustration

  • LovingGrADDitude
  • April 16, 2021
  • break cycle of frustration, love language, parenting ADHD teens

Do you know your teen’s love language?

My oldest son’s love language is acts of service (more specifically, when things are made neat and tidy for him).
Now, my kids do their chores. It’s their responsibility to clean their rooms, do their laundry, and take ownership of their space. But my son is currently juggling a ton of work with school,  rehearsals 4 nights a week as he’s in 3 different performances right now, and he’s gotten behind on his linens and keeping up his laundry.

(If you know me at all, you know that I love to do laundry and have nice fresh linens on my bed… We’re a lot alike, he and I.)

So I had to make a choice. I could take the heaping pile of dirty laundry and make it about me. I could tell myself I’ve had enough to deal with these  past few days and that I’m also handling a very overloaded work schedule. I could lay more responsibility on him and favor my own comfort over his stress level.

Or… I could reflect on the things he is doing well and the kind of person he is.

Only one of those options is going to result in a happy, healthy, collaborative relationship between me and my teen. I chose to use my teen’s love language to break the cycle of frustration.

The Dark Side of ADHD Has a Bright Side

  • parenting ADHD teens, the dark side of adhd has a bright side

I know, I talk a lot about the “small” problems – messy bedrooms, missed chores, trouble getting teens to sleep…

At LovingGrADDitude, I like to focus on the positive aspects of ADHD. We hear so much negative everywhere else that I just want to shine a spotlight on the helpful and the hopeful over here.

But, what about you parents who have bigger things to worry about? To you I say, the dark side of ADHD has a bright side.

It’s Called Revenge Bedtime Procrastination

  • LovingGrADDitude

  • ADHD and sleep, parenting ADHD teens, revenge bedtime procrastination

The CDC says that teenagers ages 13-18 should sleep 8-10 hours every night.

Their bodies (and brains) need it.

So why don’t they go to sleep?!

Sleep defiance is a constant worry for parents of teens with ADHD because we see the effect of lack of sleep when they are moody and unfocused during the day… when they feel discouraged and uncooperative.

I was talking to my oldest son the other day, and he said, “I like to stay up because then I own my time – and 9 hours of the day, other people own my time- it’s called Revenge bedtime procrastination.”

There’s just something about April that makes you want to do some spring cleaning…

I’ve been taking walks and finding more space in my schedule this month, going a little lighter on social media, and giving my teenagers more ownership of their time and cleaning.

It’s been a month, hasn’t it? It seems like no matter where you live right now, there is some kind of hardship happening.

For me, all the crazy outside gets me really grateful for the haven we’ve created inside our home with our sons.

What’s the Problem with Neurodiverse Teenagers, and How Can You Help?

Ahhh… It’s a Friday night. Your house is quiet. The tv is all yours. Your teenagers are nowhere to be found. You prop your feet up on the coffee table and relax.

That’s worry’s cue to start pestering your unsuspecting brain!

Wait… where are the kids? Were they staying with a friend tonight? Did they take their phone? What time did they say they would be back? What are they having for dinner? Should I text them? No, that would be too controlling, right? Unless they need me… 🤔🤔🤔

Collaborative Adolescence: Handing over the Keys to your Teen

Surprise! I’m coming backatcha with another blog this month just for you.

Couldn’t it wait until, Kelly?

No! It couldn’t wait because hormones wait for no one. I know…I said the H word.

Maybe your adolescence was like mine and you grew to loathe that word and all of its implications as a teen; but as a parent, I’ve learned to embrace it. You can too.

So… this really couldn’t wait.

And here’s why…

Self Care: It’s all About YOU!

Hello everyone and Welcome to 2021!

I have taken time off to reflect, regroup, reconnect with family (and myself!) and it has proven quite fruitful as I am laser focused on 2021!

Are you resolution people? Me? As much as I begin every new year with a bang and the best of intentions…

I always fall short. (hurts the self esteem- every.single. year!) But this year, I am starting out with a focus on self care.

Do You Have a Negative Emotions Bias?

Not sure if you are feeling the same as myself, but I am losing track of days and weeks!  They are seemingly the same…and running together, actually.  (The movie, Groundhog Day comes to mind lately!)

While we are all in various phases, I still feel like very little has changed, even if we are “free-er” to move about the country.  Not sure if this lifestyle has become a habit or a mindset, but it is difficult at times (at least lately for me ) to focus on what we do “have” versus things we don’t.

ADHD Persistence Doesn’t Always Pay Off

  • LovingGrADDitude
  • July 1, 2020

“Persistence pays off.”

“Energy and persistence conquer all things.”

“Persistence is the key to success.”

We’ve all heard these quotes.  They are positive statements that encourage us to keep working, keep striving to meet our goals and feel a sense of accomplishment.  Many of us probably have various motivational quotes written down to inspire and remind us to keep moving forward!

But what happens when we don’t WANT to hear these quotes and phrases?  Those times when we can be frustrated by SOMEONE (normally a loved one) being persistent in our lives…in a negative way.
